چکیده

We sought to answer the question: How do we restore characteristics of old-growth evergreen mixed-conifer forests in young even-aged stands on upland terrain at Headwaters Forest Reserve (HFR)? We described the old-growth reference condition for three stands at HFR. In each old-growth stand, trees within a 1-ha plot were inventoried. We found coast Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii) and tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) well represented while coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) dominated in terms of size. Numbers of understory and overstory trees ha −1 and average tree sizes were similar among sites, suggesting these were useful goals for restoration. Adjacent to each old-growth stand, we measured recent growth rates of second-growth trees and remnant old trees across a range of tree sizes, stand structures, and densities. The resultant growth models of redwood and Douglas-fir enabled us to project the development of precommercially thinned young stands at HFR forward in time under two silvicultural prescriptions: (i) no further management; and (ii) partial harvesting simulated before trees attained 30 cm dbh. The partial-harvesting prescription reduced stand density and set the young stand on a more rapid trajectory towards the reference condition found at HFR. OPEN ACCESS

Growth, Development and Yield in Pure and Mixed Forest Stands

Objective: Ecosystems with mixed species compared to the ones with pure compositions provide a broader range of options in the fields of biodiversity, conservation, protection and restoration. Nearly all forest plantations are established as monocultures, but research has shown that there are potential advantages to be gained by using carefully designed species mixtures in place of monocultures...

Structural Characteristic of English Yew (Taxus baccata L.) Stands in the Afratakhteh Forests Reserve

Taxus baccata L. is a native and ancient tree species growing the Hyrcanian forests that have been considered in recent years because of being in the red lists of threated species. The aim of this research was to provide quantitative characteristics of forest stand structure using a set of indicators in the natural habitat of this species. Three one-hectare sampling area were selected to ...

Belowground ectomycorrhizal community structure of mature lodgepole pine and mixed conifer stands in Yellowstone National Park

Forest development patterns following wildfire are known to influence the physical and chemical attributes of soils at different points in time, and are further thought to influence ectomycorrhizal (ECM) community structure. We used molecular methods to compare belowground ECM species richness, composition, and abundance between adjacent stands of homogenous lodgepole pine (established after a ...

Restoration of Damaged Stands : Dealing with the

Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) is an evergreen conifer that is widely dispersed in the northeastern United States. Loss of the hemlock component in the eastern forest due to the introduced hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) will have long-term consequences for terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Some of the functional attributes of hemlock (vertical structure diversity, ever...
